CL710K22 DLMS and IDIS

Hello Subscriber

Maybe you have seen the news. A German court of justice has stopped the smart meter roll out. It's fancy enough, since Germany has already a significant delay in implementation. In addition, the roll-out was planned only for consumers with more than 6,000 kWh/year. My first idea was concerns about privacy protection, but the reason behind is different.
Germany started the mandatory roll-out about one year ago, after the BSI (Federal Office for Information Security) had certified the third Smart Meter Gateway. Three different Gateway manufacturers are required by the German regulations.

If you are lost with the term "Smart Meter Gateway", you are not alone. The German AMI solution is worldwide unique. You can find a good summary here. Since no other country is using this technology, there is no common learning curve.

Now roll-out is on hold because of interoperability issues. Several utilities are joining the lawsuit. It's good understandable. Even if they run a Gateway for higher consumers, the majority of customers will still get somewhen Smart Meters with international standardized protocols.

What can we learn from the mess? Interoperability between different meter types and manufacturers is essential for utilities. The worldwide most supported protocol is DLMS. On top, you can have the IDIS protocol to gain interoperability even on data concentrator level.
