Pairing of a User Interface Unit with a Meter

A user interface unit (UIU) is a remote access terminal for STS prepayment meters. The device is placed inside the user's premises, while the energy meter is mounted outside and mostly not direct accessible. Some meter manufacturers are using the term customer interface unit (CIU). The functions are the same.

The main purpose is to charge the meter with credit. By various short-codes, it's possible to do many kinds of queries for meter status and consumption. The short codes are not unified, so refer to your user manual for operation.

UIUs are paired with the energy meter when leaving our factory. Depending on the utility order, CLOU interface units are communicating with the meter by radio frequency (RF), power line (PLC) or by wired RS-485.

If the UIU is not communicating with the energy meter, you can pair it again by typing 1593570 and the 11 or 13 digit meter number, then press the enter key (red or blue). The meter number is printed on the meter and on your customer card, which you use to buy credit.
After successful pairing, the display will show OK.
Note: This is only working for CLOU energy meters.

There can also be other reasons for a communication fail. If the UIU is connected by power line and you are disconnected, batteries need to be inserted in the UIU to recharge the meter or query the status. If this meter is in tamper mode, a recharge is impossible before clearing the tamper.

  1. Good Day,
I have a challenge with pairing meter and UIU.
    Meter Number is 25700002493
    Kindly assist.

  2. I tried connecting my meter with UIU model number CL710K11 it shows an “or”/”ot” message (I'm not sure which it is). Also, when I enter certain short codes such as to check the meter number, it either shows me “Handling” or “Err_06”.
I'd be happy if you could proscribe possible solutions

  3. After six weeks of installing CL710K22 in my apartment, meter information is still yet to be found in the system, thereby making it impossible to recharge, pls what is to be done in this situation?
    Thank you.

    1. Power companies are registering meters after installation in a manual or automated procedure. Six weeks is far too long for this process. You need to contact your power company customer support.

  4. I have a mojec meter , and I have some available units on the meter but my CIU – MC1 is showing zero units and there's is no power supply in the apartment, pls what can I do ? How can my meter be showing 22 units but CIU showing zero ? I've tried to input some codes I got online but no code is working , it shows Connect then it Failed whenever I input any code .. pls help ?

    1. The master information for UIUs (CLOU term for CIU) comes from the energy meter. The in-home unit (UIU or CIU) is only a display. I can't tell, why the display doesn't show your meter units, MC1 is no CLOU model. But when your power is cut, and you still have credit on the meter, the meter has disconnected most likely due to tamper. Observe the meter display, a rising hand is shown in that case. This indication is standard for most meter manufacturers.

  6. Somebody like HD21 CIU for Mk7MDC
I have been trying to pair it with the meter but it always given AF ERR…and I don't know what is going on..

    1. It's an EDMI energy meter. There are no standard codes for pairing. We don't have related information from this manufacturer.

    1. Yes, you need to put batteries in the slot on the rear side of the UIU.

  7. What is the maximum distance between the UIU and the meter for them to communicate?

Can I travel with the UIU and top up units from 30 miles away from the meters?

    1. The maximum distance between meter and UIU via PLC (power line communication) is 100-200 meters; by RF (radio frequency), normally 100 m, but it can also reach 200 m, if the communication has no obstacles, for example in the field.

  8. Our power provider company are not convinient on reaching them, help me generate tamper and bypass codes here in kenya

    1. Meter manufacturers can not generate meter-specific tokens once the meters are installed. Read the full explanation here.
