Pairing of a User Interface Unit with a Meter

A user interface unit (UIU) is a remote access terminal for STS prepayment meters. The device is placed inside the user's premises, while the energy meter is mounted outside and mostly not direct accessible. Some meter manufacturers are using the term customer interface unit (CIU). The functions are the same.

The main purpose is to charge the meter with credit. By various short-codes, it's possible to do many kinds of queries for meter status and consumption. The short codes are not unified, so refer to your user manual for operation.

UIUs are paired with the energy meter when leaving our factory. Depending on the utility order, CLOU interface units are communicating with the meter by radio frequency (RF), power line (PLC) or by wired RS-485.

If the UIU is not communicating with the energy meter, you can pair it again by typing 1593570 and the 11 or 13 digit meter number, then press the enter key (red or blue). The meter number is printed on the meter and on your customer card, which you use to buy credit.
After successful pairing, the display will show OK.
Note: This is only working for CLOU energy meters.

There can also be other reasons for a communication fail. If the UIU is connected by power line and you are disconnected, batteries need to be inserted in the UIU to recharge the meter or query the status. If this meter is in tamper mode, a recharge is impossible before clearing the tamper.

  1. Transaction failed. The format of your account number is incorrect. Please check and try again with the correct format of your account number. my uiu give me that msg what shall I do

    1. The UIU has only 8 digits, so it's impossible to show complex texts. I suppose you saw this message on your vending APP. The account number must match with your contract. Please check or ask your vending company.

  2. My uiu lost network and I got a second uiu. I tried pairing it with the code that you provided but after the ok message it doesn't pair. It just displays the neighbors units

    1. The meters are automatically activated after two hours power-up. I suppose you need a clear tamper code.

    1. Your power company has CIUs for replacement. I don't understand how an exchange can improve the current.

  3. Good evening sir, my prepaid meter doesn't supply current to my house whenever there is low voltage., What do you think is the problem and what is the remedy. Thanks.

  4. How can I merge different meter with a different ciu; so that I can load token.
Can I get a specific code to merge the meter with Ciu, so that I can load token.

    1. For CLOU meters you follow the instructions in the above article. For meters from other manufacturers you need to refer to their documentation.

  5. Hello Sir,
I have a problem with my Meter CL710K11, it displays a negative unit (-0.00kwh) it accepts all the Electricity token fed into it, but the relay symbol remains open and the balance remains at (-0.00kwh). When I try to reload the same token again it responds that the token is "Used". I have fed in two separate tokens of some large amounts and it still remains at -0.00kWh and I can't reload those token. The last token I loaded was 163.94units(kWh). Please help I am stranded. Meter Number (54130068361)

    1. The negative -0.00 kWh is shown because the meter is out of credit. The display shows "Used" because the token is already registered in the meter. Each token can only be used once. Your power supplier has a tool to read all token-, consumption- and relay activities from your meter in case of complaint.

  6. How will I know meter number connected to my uic since I have 2 uiu I'm unable to differentiate kindly assist me

    1. You have two UIUs, that's cool. You can check the meter number with a short code 65. Alternative is that you pair one UIU with your meter by following the instructions in the article above.

  7. Sir
We have plug in service cables to customers (8x from one box)
What will happen if one plug is disconnected while meter is serviced and replaced with another service cable
    Thanks

    1. I'm not clear about your term "plug in service cable". If you mean the UIU connection cable, nothing will happen. If the cable is part of a distribution box to connect the mains power to the meter it depends on the actual meter load. Imagine, the meter is running on 60 A. In that case you will produce a heavy spark between plug and socket during disconnection. This leads eventually to damage on plug and/or socket and it's hazarding for life! The best praxis is to disconnect the breaker on the primary side of the distribution box. Then all 8 plugs are de-energized. If this is not possible, you can disconnect the single customer during changing of the cable by tripping the customers main circuit breaker. If you are unsure, call an electrician. Stay safe!

    2. Im sorry I did not describe correctly
I have a meter box with 8 meters, 7 meters high on a pole
The connection from the box to the client is by an ovehead conductor
These conductors are plugged into the meter box by means of plug
Say for instance one client goeas out of power and he changes his connection to another port ,what will happen
      Thanks very much

    3. Now it's more clear. Each plug is assigned to a meter. So if the client can access to the plugs, he can change his power supply to another meter.
With this plug method you bypass the meter tamper detection. Put the plugs at least inside the box and lock it. Best for tamper protection is to remove the plugs and connect the overhead conductors direct to the meter terminal.

    1. Warning indicates an abnormal status. If you see an additional raised hand on the display, the meter is in tamper mode. If not, check for a text message on the display. Or maybe the meter is just run out of credit.
